In the Shenandoah National Park

When we arrived at the Big Meadows Campground on 3.11. and were still parking, we were greeted by a white-tailed deer cow that seemed to walk comfortably across the grounds. On the following days encounters of this kind should become almost the order of the day…

But we didn’t see anything of the black bears that are supposed to be in this area all year round. Except for pictures on various warning signs. Probably it was Saradevi, who didn’t even go to the wash house without her whistle…

During the day wonderful sunshine, at night already bitterly cold. Although: on the Campground were to be seen still some tents and in the morning and in the evening sat the Americans, although thickly wrapped up, but joyfully around the own campfire. On 11.11. the campground and probably the whole park will be closed during the winter.

During the two days of our stay we enjoy a bigger and a smaller hike along some streams and waterfalls. Mostly we were almost alone in the forest, only at the hotspots we met other visitors of the national park. At first we had intended to walk the two hikes in one piece. However, the paths are partly very rough (the ground is crossed with strong roots and often very stony), which did not please the ankles. In addition, at the end of each circular trail, we went uphill with a lot of stamina, so that we reached our stand quite exhausted. (Having fun doesn’t have to be fun all the time!)

By the way, it should be mentioned that we will now be on the road for a while without compensating wedges for the car wheels: We had left our place to refuel the battery during the day and deposited our wedges on our picnic bench. (Yes, the campsite is without water and electricity!) When we returned in the late afternoon, the wedges had disappeared. The rangers, who obviously had taken us into their hearts, regretted this very much. Well, there’s always some shrinkage. With a heavy heart we “left” our cable drum on a camping site, because it simply took too much space and unfortunately could not be used… Since the autumn will show itself now according to the weather report from its cooler side, we leave on 6.11. direction south. For a while we drive along the Skyline Drive and enjoy the wonderful autumn colours of the landscape and let the view over the Appalachian Mountains pass by.

Gradually the picture of the landscape changes. In the south of Virginia it remains hilly, but fields and pastures point to rural agriculture. Our way leads past a farm shop, but self-service and without a café. Cocoa, coffee and something to nibble on then there was a little further in Floyd, in the delightful Café “Cocoa Mia” – actually a Chocolataria, confectionery or chocolate manufactory… 😋 (Who wants, finds something in the Internet!)

At nightfall we reach our destination on our way to the southern Atlantic coast. Almost homely feelings come up when we see the Walmart parking lot from a distance and a little later join a manageable number of other motorhomes and trucks.

Tomorrow, we decide, our destination will be Typee Island…

Wir freuen uns auf den Austausch mit dir...
