By bike to Kennedy Space Center

Meanwhile we arrived in the south of Florida – a bad weather front drove us further than we thought. Although the temperatures had risen noticeably, the sky remained mostly grey in grey and the longing for a few days of rest with sun, beach and lazing grew with every dozen miles. And my impression of the landscape did not coincide with my inner pictures of sun-drenched Florida.

After our overnight stay in Beverly Beach we stopped for two nights at Manatee Hammock Campground, not far from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The trip led us along the coastal road through some tourist strongholds, but without the high season. Since the international race track of Daytona was on the way, we got an impression of the surrounding area. We got to see almost nothing, we renounced a paid sightseeing tour, especially as the flair of big races was missing and we are not to be counted among the motor sport enthusiasts. But Nicole, Sven and the children were already there and told about it …

But we wanted to see this American space airport in any case. Since it was only 14 kilometres away from our place to stay overnight and the weather was also good for bicycles, we covered the distance on our mountain bikes. At the end of this day I should not only have heard something about the history and the adventure of space travel, but I should also have had an adventure with the bike myself:

So far we have experienced on our bike tours in the land of unlimited possibilities very often well-developed, safe bike paths and prudent, defensive motorists. The way to the Spacecenter led after few kilometers over the bridge of the Indian River. From now on we continued on a car road, without edge strips and with racing motor vehicles, which were predominantly endeavored to keep the safety distance. Later on the way back to the Amigo, when darkness set in, considerate drivers were the big exception and we were very happy when we reached the campground …

When we reached the visitor center, friendly security guards welcomed us at the entrance to the parking lots. There was no parking fee for our bikes. However, a short stopover was necessary because it had to be clarified for safety’s sake whether visitors with bicycles could be admitted at all. It was allowed – and we drove to our parking lot like exotics. All day long I saw no more cyclists!

The area of the spaceport is huge. For the normal entrance fee you could also take a guided bus tour through the area to the start ramps. There was a lot to see in several halls and a designed outdoor area. It is really not exaggerated to recommend to plan at least 5 hours for a visit! We booked an audio guide in German – nevertheless: most of the information, films and charts were exclusively in English. For my part, I recorded the atmosphere and otherwise only noticed which topics were being dealt with. However, the visit was impressive in any case and also the admission price is okay for what is offered. For interested: under https://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/ are details to experience …

For me, the adventurous bicycle ride there, the skilful staging of space travel and some exhibits remain in my memory. On the topic: “How do I become an astronaut?” I took up the impulse that visions form the necessary basis for a successful heroic deed like that of space history and that without them no progress seems possible.

What about my heroic deeds and visions? What am I proud of? What role models and ideals do I have? Well, I might take up this topic again on this journey.

Perhaps you will also make the impulse your own. I look forward to your reactions …

Wir freuen uns auf den Austausch mit dir...
